YUGADI OR UGADI OR GUDI PADWA FESTIVAL


An event which is celebrated by a group of people which signifies some characteristic aspect of that group of people. It is often an holiday. Many times specific religion also celebrates this event and always there is a reason to celebrate this event and this event is called as festival. Always there is an origin to mark a celebration and most of the times the significant origin is agriculture.

As western countries celebrate the calender date January 1st as new year, we hindus also mark a specific day as the beginning (adi in Sanskrit) of the year (yuga in Sanskrit) so this Yugadi or Ugadi came into existence. A specific group of Hindus who speak Telugu and Kannada follow luni-solar calender so on the day Chaitra shudhdha Paadyami is the first day of the Indian month of Chaitra which begins the day after new moon after the sun enters Aries(mesha).

This festival is observed by Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Kodava speaking in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa. The state of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh call this festival as Ugadi, Karnataka call it as Yugadi the people of Maharashtra term the same festival as Gudi Padwa. The Marwari of Rajasthan celebrate the same day as their new year day Thapna.

Preprations for the festival begin a week ahead. Houses are given a through wash. Shopping for new clothes. On Ugadi day, people wake up early and take oil shower decorate the entrance of the house with mango leaves and this mango leaves signifies good crop and general well-being.

Ugadi Pachadi:

Ugadi Pachadi is associated with Ugadi – however taste is not so delicious – a combination of six different tastes made of the following ingredients.

Neem buds/Flowers for its bitterness, signifying sadness
Jaggery for sweetness, signifying happiness
Green Chilli/Pepper for its hot taste, signifying anger
Salt for saltness, signifying fear
Tamarind juice for its sourness, signifying disgust
Neem Flowers and small amount of tender mango seed for making it astringent adding an element of surprise

Apart from Ugadi Pachadi other special dish prepared is Obattu in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, its like a stuffed roti and can have it with Ghee and milk topping or coconut milk.

Later, a group of people gather to listen to the recitation of religious panchagam of the new year and the general forecast of the year to come.
